Why use a basting stitch?
A basting stitch is used to temporarily join fabric pieces together so the seamstress can check a garment on a client for fit and adjust the fit accordingly. These days mostly pins are used. (an extra benefit to using the basting method, is that there is less danger of getting stabbed with pins too!)
